It appears that the new Apple TV is no longer just the result of rumors, to become a real product, which can reach the market later in 2012. At least that's what the market says analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, which states categorically that the Cupertino company is in talks with "major suppliers of components for the TV market."
Gene says that Apple has come into contact with Piper Jaffray for the company to make an assessment of the acquisition costs of various components connected to devices with large screens. The analyst believes that a clear evidence that the company is exploring the production of a television. Gene supports his theory with meetings of engineers and executives from Apple and Asian component suppliers. The analyst also suggests that Apple is meeting with these companies since 2010, with the goal of a probable release of a final product for this year. Gene believes that the Apple TV should have the Siri as voice control system, or something very similar to the feature, which debuted on the iPhone 4S. Models should be between 42 and screens 50 inches and, hopefully, Apple plans to offer these TVs built into the new iMacs, at an early stage.
Munster also said the company could try various approaches to help in the penetration of the new Apple TV, reaching several sources: conventional TV signals, TV streaming services like Hulu and Netflix, and even the "a la carte", where the user can choose the content you want to subscribe monthly. However, the analyst says that this last method is the most difficult to achieve, since licensing agreements existing content can create barriers to a new form of consumption.
Munster estimates that Apple could sell about 1.4 million units of this new product, taking advantage of a market that is expected to sell around 106 million units of Smart TVs in 2012. The analyst points out that Apple does not come into the market already, in order to reinvent them, so that the company will not release a TV when it has a different approach from competitors, and that the proposal aligns with the other products the company.
